We are all time travelers. We spend the majority of our lives stuck in the past or obsessing about the future. Sometimes it’s to reflect on happy memories or exciting events we look forward to, but most of the time it’s to replay trauma that has occurred in the past or to create fears of the future. This is because of our negativity bias, the thing that gives 3x the weight to our negative thoughts & emotions as to positive ones (source). It’s the reason I started this blog to begin with – to help us overcome negativity and instead, lean toward the light.
The good news is: we can harness the power of the present moment to cultivate our self-compassion and use it to heal moments of past trauma and our fears for the future. This meditation came to me when I was reflecting on a particularly traumatic memory that has been with me for about a year. While meditating on it, I realized that, by placing my hand on my heart in a gesture of self-love, it was as though I was placing my hand on that girl’s heart – the younger me – who needed it most during that difficult experience. I found relief in the moment and a lessening of the memory’s intensity, moving forward.
You see, time is a construct. If you can embody the same negative feelings when replaying the movie of a memory, then why can’t the reverse also be true? Why can’t you send that past self positive thoughts in order to change your experience? It doesn’t matter was has happened to you in the past or what will happen in the future. Right now, as long as you have breath in your lungs, you have the power to send yourself love, forgiveness, and understanding. And, if none of that hits home with you, then at the very least, consider this an exercise in practicing self-care.
In this meditation, we repeat the following mantra to our future & past selves:
I recognize the pain you are in.
I am so sorry for your suffering.
I know you can choose another path.
I know healing is possible.
I love you.
I’ve got your back.
I promise, everything will turn out fine.
I hope this meditation helps you begin to heal past trauma and heal any fear for the future. If you’re still struggling to send yourself love & compassion, I highly recommend practicing my guided meditation on worthiness first. It can help to build a foundation of worthiness from our connection to the Earth before digging into more traumatic memories.
