Follow Luminous Leanings on the 'gram!

Doing some intense inner critic work over here. That ever-present figure visited me in a meditation as the old hag from Snow White, offering me the poisoned apple that represented a toxic belief system. One that would keep me hidden, safe, unseen, and unheard in order to "protect me" from bullies, criticism, and ultimately... from becoming who I am meant to be.⠀ 🍎☠️⠀ I was reminded of the Buddha asking the demon Mara to tea when he appeared, and did the same with the hag. I cupped her face in my hands and asked her what she was most afraid of.⠀ 🍎☠️⠀ "Of being separate, of being cut off from love and acceptance, of suffering." I asked her if she already was those things, and it turned out she'd been subsisting off her own stash of poison apples.⠀ 🍎☠️⠀ As her understanding grew, I invited her to remove her cloak revealing her true form. It was my own self, full of fear and pain. I showed her what was possible if I rejected her poison apples and lived my true life's purpose, and transformed into my Higher Self, a powerful goddess Queen!⠀ 🍎☠️⠀ Diving into poetry, folklore, and fairy tales during these times is helping my brain integrate my experience, and make sense of the symbols that come forth in my dreams and meditations. What did the existential philosopher mean by the phrase "a farce"? Is it wackadoo to make meaning from tragedy? ⠀ 🕵️⠀ In The Triumph of Narrative, Robert Fulford writes, “The anthropologist Clifford Geertz says that humans are ‘symbolizing, conceptualizing, meaning-seeking’ animals. In our species, he says, ‘the drive to make sense out of our experience, to give it form and order, is evidently as real and as pressing as the more familiar biological needs.’ To Geertz, a human being is an organism ‘which cannot live in a world it is unable to understand'.”⠀ 🕵️⠀ I believe that. I feel it in my bones. Not that COVID-19 is happening FOR our benefit - so that we can evolve into some next-level conscious state. But that we can take the tragic reality and make meaning anyway. We can grieve its losses and the inevitable pain to come - and still find learning through it. Because it's what we humans do.⠀ 🕵️⠀ It's during these times, philosophy enters into her power and the earth returns under one's feet. How are you NOURISHING yourself today?⠀ 🌻⠀ I took a page from my cat's book and have been lying in the sun.⠀ I've been listening to bedtime stories with my night light on.⠀ I cook more time-intensive delicious meals.⠀ I sit in my garden and read for hours on end.⠀ I have a beer by the fire with my husband.⠀ 🌻⠀ To nourish yourself implies you are present for it. You are fully alive as you are enjoying something decadent and luxurious - even if only made so by the attention you give to it.⠀ 🌻⠀ Think about it. Which is more nourishing? A dark chocolate cake you consume in 30 seconds while staring at a screen? SIMPLY NOTICE 👆🙏⠀ ☄️⠀ Is it "OOWWWWIIIIEEEEE" or "UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH"?⠀ Is it such an instant resistance that you hardly even notice?⠀ Is a story triggered that tells you it's your fault because you're bad?⠀ Is there a belief about your worthiness, what you must DO, or what you should have done differently?⠀ ☄️⠀ Remember: ⠀ Pain is inevitable. The Suttas are the parables of the Buddha. In this Bamboo Acrobat Sutta, the Buddha teaches an important lesson about self-care. This was shared during my Sangha zoom call last week (a Sangha is a Buddhist community who practices and learns together). I found it so relevant for right now, as we're all drastically altering our daily life to protect others. Enjoy!⠀ 🙏⠀ Once upon a time, monks, a bamboo acrobat,⠀ setting himself upon his bamboo pole,⠀ addressed his assistant Medakathalika:⠀ "Come you, my dear Medakathalika,⠀ and climbing up the bamboo pole,⠀ stand upon my shoulders."⠀ "Okay, master" the assistant Medakathalika⠀ replied to the bamboo acrobat;⠀ and climbing up the bamboo pole⠀ she stood on the master's shoulders.⠀ 🙏⠀ So then the bamboo acrobat said this to his assistant Medakathalika:⠀ "You look after me, my dear Medakathalika, and I'll look after you.⠀ Thus with us looking after one another, guarding one another,⠀ we'll show off our craft, receive some payment,⠀ and safely climb down the bamboo pole."⠀ 🙏⠀ This being said, the assistant Medakathalika said this to the bamboo acrobat:⠀ "That will not do at all, master!⠀ You look after yourself, master, and I will look after myself.⠀ Thus with each of us looking after ourselves, guarding ourselves,⠀ we'll show off our craft, receive some payment,⠀ and safely climb down from the bamboo pole.⠀ That's the right way to do it!"⠀ 🙏⠀ [The Buddha said:]⠀ Just like the assistant Medakathalika said to her master:⠀ "I will look after myself,"⠀ so should you, monks, practice the establishment of mindfulness.⠀ You should (also) practice the establishment of mindfulness (by saying)⠀ "I will look after others."⠀ 🙏⠀ Looking after oneself, one looks after others.⠀ Looking after others, one looks after oneself.⠀ 🙏 my S⠀ And how does one look after others by looking after oneself?⠀ By practicing (mindfulness), by developing (it), by doing (it) a lot.⠀ And how does one look after oneself by looking after others?⠀ By patience, by non-harming, by loving kindness, by caring (for others).⠀ (Thus) looking after oneself, one looks after others;⠀ and looking after others, one looks after oneself.
Mother Earth has not left you, will never leave you, can never leave you.⠀ Although we are more disconnected than ever from her, in many ways⠀ {by social distancing, by technology, by stress and overwhelm, by mounting expectations and paralyzing choices},⠀ Let us recall her in our bodies. ⠀ Stand upon the earth with your bare feet.⠀ Let her whisper the truth to you - that there is nowhere to go, nothing to escape, no one you have to be.⠀ You are hers and she is yours.⠀ Let that be enough today.⠀ 🌱⠀ #earth #poem #poetry #motherearth #nature #forest #meditation #be #still
